Transition
Thanksgiving came and went. We had a very nice little group. Mary's girlhood friend Jodie came in with her husband Dave from Ohio and stayed for a few days. We had not seen them for a few years so it was nice to get reacquainted. Our dinner guests included: Bette's dear friend Lee Talley, Karen Eldred who brought a wonderful chicken salad and antipasto (even though we did not have "pasto"), Fr. Charles, Nora, Mary and me. I like serving dinner for eight. We only have to put one leaf in the table and Mary has a greater choice of table cloths. Speaking of table...Mary's table was beautiful as always. I made two pies on Wednesday night. The pecan was the best ever and the "Sho Nuff" sweet potatoe (sic) was once again a big hit. I brined the turkey with two cups of kosher salt, a half cup of sugar, whole pepper corns, dried onions and some Italian seasonings. It was great. Last time I thought the turkey was too salty, but not this time. It was just right. I made rutabagas, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, mashed potatoes, gravy (which was a big hit) and a small ham for Nora who doesn't like turkey. We were stuffed. Oh yeah, and stuffing made from Mary's flax seed and millet bread. Fabulous!
We mostly hung around. We took a trip to Ikea to get Nora a new futon and that was just about it.
Today Mary, Nora and Elsa, Nora's roommate went downtown on the train to see the windows and to walk Michigan Avenue. At my last check, they were having a great time.
I think the fall tree is coming down tonight and it looks like transition to Christmas looms. Shopping is well on its way. We did a lot of on line and mail order. Why go to the stores when you can just click or call?
Still no news on my job. I guess I'll be doing something next term. Maybe they will just leave me alone.
I'm feeling a little something coming on and I may have to take a day tomorrow. Nora goes back to Augustana on Sunday. Her first term grades were great. I wish I had been able to spend a little more time with her. She has been able to pick up some judging money at three speech contests while she was home. I know she finds being on the other end of the competitions intriguing.
Well, the bell's about to ring and then I'm outta here.
Peace to you and to those you love.
