This is a blog intended to bring our family and friends closer by giving them an opportunity to participate in a web discussion. I am new to blogging, so I don't know where this is going to take us, but hey, it's the 21st Century. Peace

Retirement

So, the contract has been ratified. Twenty-one months of grueling negotiations resulting in a little pay raise, some improved insurance benefits (which cost a little more), an unknown job change and retirement language that releases me from district 205 at the end of the school year in 2010. Yesterday I attended a retirement meeting. I watched many of my colleagues question and argue and grouse and I watched the union leadership sit and squirm and look as if they had just caught one in the gut. Needless to say, the environment was pretty tense...but not for me. When I left the meeting I wanted to jump for joyand shout, "I'm outta here in 2010". As I got in my car I called Mary and told her that I finally felt good about the contract and the reality had sunk in that I am retiring when I want to and pretty much under my o0wn terms and that I am happy about it.
So that's it. Today I am going to write my letter and take it to the district and walk out with a huge smile on my face.
Peace to you and to those you love.
Rob

I can't wait for Rob to join me in retirement! We enjoy each other's company, and I can't wait to be able "go play" with my husband whenever we want rather than having to work around a school schedule. People who complain that they aren't getting "enough" in this contract or that what others got was better should remember that every year brings different conditions, situations etc. People need to live in the NOW. Things are not what they were 10, 5 or even 2 years ago, and people have to deal with what they have in the NOW. Life is too short to complain about what one is not getting. One has to look at the "blessings" that he/she IS getting. So, get that letter into district, Rob, and we will rejoice that you have the opportunity to see "light at the end of the tunnel" when you don't have to get up at 5:30 am except to play golf if you want to.

Retirement? You're too young to retire! I'm too young for you to retire!

    But I'm happy for you.

Hi Mary and Rob- Congratulations for your future retirement! This is my last year and I am glad to say that I am not sad to be counting the days. I, like you Mary, want to be able to plan my days of relaxation and play around my schedule and Paul's and not the school's. I want to be able to visit Abby and Ashley during the middle of the week and not plan around a long week-end that will mean making sure I have the lesson plan and materials in the way a substitute can follow. But sorry Rob, I do have only 130 days or less to go.
Have a good week! Paul and Judd
