My perfect day at work
Yesterday was a complete surprise. I had a great day at work. What made it so great?
Well, here's how it went. I started my day with a projection unit and screen setup in the cafeteria for the Career Counselor. Next, I got to trouble shoot a network connection problem with George, our head maintenance guy. We got to run cables, crimp connectors, swap out hubs and punch down wires in the closet. After about an hour of punching, crimping, swapping and running around, we solved the problem and the teacher can now take attendance, do grades and above all surf the Internet. Next I had a couple of Union and personnel issues. They are always interesting. One had to do with a teacher being let go for having the wrong certificate and another was a peer to peer complaint about a dean and how she handled a very troublesome kid. Then the principal asked me if I could use a couple of new projectors and of course I said, "Yes, can I get a laptop with that?" So I got to bid out some projectors and a laptop. Then I had a department chairman who happens to be a picket captain ask me how we could stimulate more response for our informational picketing. That was an engaging discussion. Then, I got a package from my favorite company CDW which contained a new wireless keyboard and mouse for the Principal's secretary. I got to install that and then we engaged in a discussion about The Secret and Anthony de Mello. It just so happened that Judy and I were both dealing with person to person issues and I got to share mine with her and she seemed to feel better about hers after hearing about mine. Then, the keyboard had a problem and I called Jason the tech, and he came and we trouble shot the problem, fixed it and went on our merry ways. Later I got to have a conversation with a teacher about making CAT 5 cables and I learned something very interesting. If both ends match, it's going to be a good cable and that the sequence matters only when one is trying to do a specialized cable like a crossover. I did my hall duty and then I went off to the Association office for a negotiations strategy meeting. Great ideas were shared and plans were made and we all left feeling like we were all still in the game.
I really couldn't wait to get home to tell Mary I had a great day at work. I'm sure she was shocked. And when Nora called and I told her I had had a great day at work, she asked "What made it so great?" And that made it even better that she would ask and be interested.
Maybe these kinds of opportunities exist every day and I am just not aware of them. Maybe yesterday was just special. Regardless, it was the best day at work I had had in a long time and I am thankful for it and I will always remember that day fondly.
Peace to you and to those you love.
Rob

Well, good for you, Rob! Tying "The Secret" to your post, I think we manufacture our days to a large degree. Outlook really has a lot to do with our experiences. If we're in crappy moods, we tend to notice the crap around us. If we're in good moods, we tend to notice the good stuff. Not that bad stuff can't creep into good day and vice versa, but I believe intention counts for a lot.
The better news, of course, is that good begets good. Here's hoping today was just as swell.

I really hope that Rob has more of those "perfect" work days in the future. These kinds of days are better for his health than those stressful days. I really want Rob around for many years to come to enjoy retirement with me. Let's try to keep a positive attitude to offset all the negative that "bosses" all over the globe think that they need to dish out in order to run things well. To bring this idea back to the educational mileau, research has shown that teachers with a positive attitude with students do so much better than those who are negative. Our school district expects us to be this positive influence in the classroom. Why can't the "powers that be" practice what they preach?
